Gluten intolerance

Some people suffer from an intolerance to certain foods. Coeliac disease is when a person has an inability to digest gluten and must follow a life-long gluten free diet. Gluten is the main protein component of wheat, rye, triticale, barley and oats.

There are some foods which are naturally gluten free such as unprocessed fruits, vegetables, eggs, rice, fish, milk, cheese, most yogurts, as well as most meat products.

However, it can be found in an abundance of processed foods. Bread, cakes, biscuits, pizza, pasta and many breakfast cereals, as well as certain soups, sauces, gravies, confectionary and smallgoods contain gluten.

As well as the symptoms of the condition itself, people with coeliac disease may find they develop an intolerance to lactose. Lactose is the carbohydrate found naturally in dairy milk.

A combined gluten and lactose free diet can be a major lifestyle change, but it doesn’t mean that taste has to be one of the sacrifices.
